John MacKay Elliott papers, 1900.

This collection contains the memoirs of John MacKay Elliot as dictated to his secretary in 1900. These memoirs describe his experiences and memories at his family homes in Pendleton, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia as well as visiting his uncle, William Henry Stiles' plantation in Bartow County, Georgia from 1854 to 1863 and 1865 to 1870. Also included is a family tree with members of the MacKay, Elliott, McQueen, Williamson, Bourke, and Cowper families.

John MacKay Elliott was born on 6 October 1844 and was the eighth child of Dr. Ralph Emms Elliott and Margaret Cowper MacKay of Savannah, Georgia. He grew up in Pendleton, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia and served in the Civil War. Following his service in the war, Elliott moved to Los Angles, California for health reasons and later became president of the Savings Bank of Southern California.
